California’s Universal Meals Program

By now, schools have already opened back up for the new school year. With a sudden rise in food prices and food insecurity following the pandemic, families everywhere continue to face economic hardships. In an attempt to fix this growing issue, the policymakers in California came up with a plan – the Universal Meals Program.

With this program, students are provided with free breakfast and lunch meals every day at school. The Universal Meals Program is designed to benefit educational districts and families, whom are all equally impacted by the current economic and food insecurity problems. California’s Universal Meals Program is part of the Assembly Bill 130 and was signed into law by Governor of California, Gavin Newsom in July 2022. Thanks to this program, we won’t have to worry as much about our children being hungry while they are in school. All students are able to benefit from this program regardless of status and household income. California is the very first state to implement such a program. The state of Maine ultimately adopted the program as well. Hopefully, every other state will do the same.

Things To Stop Doing to Start Healing

I get it, we all have habits and traits we need to break. But it can be so hard to do so. Here’s a few things we need to stop doing so that we can start our healing process.

  • Holding grudges.
  • Pretending to be okay and strong versus vulnerable.
  • Ignoring being hurt and judging our own feelings.
  • Not naming our own needs.
  • Being silent about our pain just so we can keep the peace.
  • Blaming ourselves for the thing we really have no control over.
  • Thinking small about our abilities and our purpose.
  • Carrying all these emotional baggage that don’t belong to us.
  • Entertaining any unhealthy relationships.
  • Replaying the pain in our heads.
  • Refusing to release the things that drain us.
  • Not being clear about our boundaries.
  • Wasting our time and energy.
  • Being unkind to ourselves for not healing fast enough.
  • Repeating old bad habits out of fear and comfort.
  • Thinking that we have to figure everything out alone.
  • Holding ourselves hostage to our past and mistakes.
  • Trying to make people understand who were not meant to.

Cops Rush to a California High School Due to Gun Shots. Staff Injured.

Yesterday, past three o’clock, there were heavy police presence and activity at the Vallejo High School in Vallejo, California following reports of gunshots. There were about three classes going on during a Career Fair being held in the campus when a few of the teenagers got into a fight with a few other guys. The three other guys fled the scene as the staff tried to break up the fight. Upon fleeing, the other guys fired shots and the staff who was breaking up the fight was shot and rushed to the hospital. Luckily the injuries sustained are not life threatening. As per protocol, a school-wide lockdown was immediately put in place.

An update from the Vallejo Unified School District was issued today regarding the shooting incident outside of the campus yesterday. The staff member is currently recovering from his injuries. The district has partnered up with the Vallejo Police Department to ensure safety and will be working on plans to ensure more safety for everyone. They also have mental health providers ready on-sight to assist any students who need additional support following the incident.

The VPD is still investigating the incident and the motive. There will also be an increase in the presence of site safety officers and Vallejo Police Department patrolling the area. For more information and tips, please contact the VPD immediately.

Lake Herman in Benicia, CA

A quiet little spot along the borderline of Vallejo and Benicia in California sits Lake Herman. A small but cozy place, Lake Herman is great for a quick hike, fishing, and hanging out with a small group of family and friends. The park is located along Lake Herman Road, a scenic drive filled with countryish views.

Restrooms or “porta-potties” are in the parking lot. Parking may be an issue since parking spaces are very limited. Not to worry, finding a spot is rarely a problem even so. Lake Herman is open to the public daily from dusk until dawn.

California’s Universal Meals Program

Schools are now starting to open back up for the 2022-2023 school year. With the sudden rise in food prices, inflation, and food insecurity following the pandemic, many families continue to face many hardships. In an attempt to resolve the issue, policymakers in California came up with the Universal Meals Program.

What is the Universal Meals Program? The Universal Meals Program was designed to provide free meals to students attending schools. Children are able to receive free meals every day they are in school. The meals provided are for breakfast and lunch, hosted at the school’s cafeteria. This program benefits both educational districts and families impacted by the current food insecurity situation.

California’s Universal Meals Program is part of the Assembly Bill 130, which was signed into law by the state governor, Gavin Newsom. All of the students are eligible to receive these meals regardless of status and household income. California is the first state to implement such a program. The state of Maine has also opted in and have implemented the Universal Meals Program as well.

Thanks to this program, many of us won’t have to worry about our kids going hungry while they’re at school. Hopefully, other states will do the same for their students as well. It would make a huge difference in many people’s lives, especially our kids’.

The Aloha Koa

Just last June, our family spent a week in in the beautiful paradise called Hawaii. It’s by far the most beautiful place I have ever been to. The environment. The culture. The people. The food. Incomparable is an understatement.

A believer in love and family, I have never given up hope of a better tomorrow with what and who matters most. A warrior on shall say. Hence the name of my blog. As many know, “aloha” means hi and bye. What some may not know is that the word also means love. The Hawaiian word for warrior is “koa.” None of us should ever give up hope on love, family, and we must greet each tomorrow with a beautiful hello.

Ohana means family and family means nobody gets left behind. My daughter and I can honestly say that we both left our hearts in Hawaii. Though she’s unsure whether she would want to move there or just keep coming back for vacations, I don’t mind living there at all. I really don’t.

Deliciously Healthy

Prep Time: 11 mins ยท Servings: 2

Ingredients

1/4 cup old-fashioned oats or quick oats
1 banana chopped into chunks and frozen
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter
1/2 tablespoon pure maple syrup plus additional to taste
1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon kosher salt
Ice (optional)

Preparation

Then brush over the copy or tracing with dry red ochre, and having rubbed the copper plate with a piece of bees-wax, lay the red side of the tracing on the plate; then with a smooth iron point, trace the same lines again, that they may thus be transferred to the plate by means of the red ochre and wax.

Take up the paper and trace the lines on the plate with a needle, thus scoring the lines slightly on the copper.

Then warm the plate and wipe off the wax, or wash it off with spirits of turpentine, and rub the plate with fine dry whiting. The next instrument to proceed with is the graver; consisting of a blade of steel about three inches long, which is fixed in a convenient handle like an awl.

The form of the graver should be triangular, or between a triangle and lozenge, having two sides plane and the other round or swelled; and should taper regularly from the handle to the point, or nearly so, but the point must be ground off obliquely so that the edge may extend a little farther than the back; and the edge should rise a little rounding towards the point. It is very essential that the edge and point of the graver should be kept very sharp.
